Artist Statement 작가 노트
My work begins with the attempt to draw a perfect line or circle. Yet a line drawn repeatedly by hand never moves in perfect straightness or closes into a flawless form. Minute tremors and deviations accumulate through repetition, gradually altering the image. These small errors remain on the surface as traces of human time and the body.
In my work, circles, squares, triangles, and crosses are not simply geometric forms. They are structures in which center and boundary, inside and outside, ascent and descent push and pull against one another. A circle creates a center and draws a boundary, but through the repeated movement of the hand, that center trembles and the boundary opens, shifts, or collapses. I look for moments in which completeness and imperfection, the ideal and the real, meet within an unstable balance.
Color is another language through which this tension appears. When distant or contrasting colors are placed together, they do not dissolve into one another. Instead, each color keeps its own voice while pushing against and responding to the others. At the border where colors meet, in the vibration produced by repeated lines, and in the distance between seeing and being seen, the image becomes less a fixed picture than a shifting relation.
My recent work extends this language into the field of emotion and record. In Gaze Halo, I record daily emotional states through color and observe how those colors accumulate over time. Here, color is not a simple symbol of emotion. It is a record of rhythm, bodily condition, and the direction of gaze.
나는 완벽한 선과 원을 그리려는 시도에서 출발한다. 그러나 손으로 반복해 그리는 선은 결코 완벽하게 닫히거나 곧게 나아가지 않는다. 미세한 떨림과 오차는 반복될수록 형태를 조금씩 바꾸고, 그 어긋남은 화면 안에 인간의 시간과 몸의 흔적으로 남는다.
나의 작업에서 원, 사각형, 삼각형, 십자는 단순한 기하학적 도형이 아니다. 그것들은 중심과 경계, 안과 밖, 상승과 하강이 서로를 밀고 당기는 구조다. 원은 중심을 만들고 경계를 세우지만, 반복되는 손의 움직임 속에서 그 중심은 흔들리고 경계는 다시 열리거나 무너진다. 나는 이 불안정한 균형 속에서 완전과 불완전, 이상과 현실이 한 화면 안에서 만나는 순간을 찾는다.
색은 이러한 긴장을 드러내는 또 하나의 언어다. 서로 멀리 떨어진 색들이 한 화면에 놓일 때, 색들은 하나로 섞이기보다 각자의 목소리를 가진 채 서로를 밀어내고 끌어당긴다. 색과 색이 맞닿는 경계, 선이 반복되며 생기는 진동, 보는 나와 보이는 나 사이의 거리 속에서 화면은 하나의 고정된 이미지가 아니라 계속 흔들리는 관계가 된다.
최근의 작업은 이러한 조형 언어를 감정과 기록의 영역으로 확장한다. Gaze Halo에서 나는 매일의 감정을 색으로 기록하고, 그 색들이 시간 속에서 축적되는 방식을 관찰한다. 여기서 색은 감정의 단순한 상징이 아니라, 하루의 리듬과 몸의 상태, 시선의 방향이 남긴 기록이다.

Joo Boram (b. 1994) is an artist based in Seoul. A graduate of Korea National University of Arts (2020), she paints the moment in which opposing forces — completeness and imperfection, center and boundary — find balance within tension, through the ceaseless repetition of line and the contrast of color.
주보람(b. 1994)은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 작가다. 한국예술종합학교를 졸업(2020)했으며, 끊임없는 선의 반복과 색의 대비를 통해 '완전과 불완전', '중심과 경계' 같은 대립하는 힘들이 긴장 속에서 균형을 이루는 순간을 그린다.
